Analysis of Velocity Lag in Sediment-laden Open Channel Flows

چکیده

Laboratory experiments have recently confirmed that the streamwise particle velocity is largely less than that of the fluid in sediment-laden flows. This velocity lag is investigated analytically in the present study based on the drag force exerting on a particle in the presence of other neighbors. The normalized drag force or the hindrance coefficient is found generally dependent on the particle concentration, particle Reynolds number and specific gravity. The velocity lag is then derived by relating the hindrance coefficient to the shear stress distribution for uniform sediment-laden open channel flows. The analysis shows that the profile of the velocity lag, when normalized by the shear velocity, is associated with the shear Reynolds number, dimensionless particle diameter and specific gravity. For the dilute condition, the velocity lag distribution varies only with the shear Reynolds number, and the lag can be ignored if the shear Reynolds number is less than unity. The theoretical predictions are comparable to the limited experimental results. Asst. Turbulent Shear Stress in Heterogeneous Sediment-laden Flows

Current knowledge of the mechanics of alluvial channels depends very largely on calculations of turbulent shear stresses; typical examples are the beginning of motion of sediment particles and sediment transport in alluvial channels. If shear stress can be well defined in clear-water flows, comparatively little is known about shear stresses in sediment-laden flows. Einstein and Chien (1955) pro...

Numerical Analysis of Sediment Transport in Sewer Pipe

The efficiency and economical performance of sewer systems is an essential issue in urban drainage. The need for sewers to carry sediment has been recognized for many years. One of the main problems in designing sewerage systems is the sediment deposition. Sedimentation in sewers occurs regularly according to the alternating natural flow. The present study investigates the hydraulic characteris...

Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows in the Khuran Channel, Persian Gulf, Iran

The Khuran Channel, Southern Iran (26°45’N), is a topographically complex channel which is open at both ends. Owning to its particular geometry, this narrow channel is subjected to strong tidal currents.Across-channel distribution of the mean and tidal flows were obtained over a semidiurnal tidal cycle in the Khuran Channel where the highest tidal velocity in the third day of the seco...

A Comparative Study of Extreme Learning Machines and Support Vector Machines in Prediction of Sediment Transport in Open Channels

The limiting velocity in open channels to prevent long-term sedimentation is predicted in this paper using a powerful soft computing technique known as Extreme Learning Machines (ELM). The ELM is a single Layer Feed-forward Neural Network (SLFNN) with a high level of training speed. The dimensionless parameter of limiting velocity which is known as the densimetric Froude number (Fr) is predicte...
